MARVEL CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS
Remember the Marvel comic series Contest of Champions from the early 80s? No? That’s fine, because Kabam’s mobile fighting game Marvel: Contest of Champions takes only the broadest inspiration from the godfather of limited series. As you collect various heroes and villains, you’ll have to master your fighting skills in order to progress through a story involving Kang, the Collector, and a mysterious realm that is more than it first appears. That’s on top of PvP Arenas and daily events, which can also help you improve your team and the characters on it.
Sounds like fun, and it is. Of course you don’t have to step in against some of Marvel’s heaviest hitters alone. Follow Gamezebo’s Marvel: Contest of Champions Tips, Cheats and Strategies and you’ll have a leg up on the competition, no matter how super-powered it might be.
- The control system isn’t very complex as fighting games go (you won’t see this at EVO, in other words), but there’s more to it than just button-mashing. Defense is important, so learn to block. And since most characters still take some damage while blocking, it’s wise to learn to dodge by swiping left on the left side of the screen as well. The art of fighting in this game is about avoiding as much damage as possible and attacking only when you have an opening. However you do it, minimizing your loss of health is important because …
- Your Champions don’t recover health in-between fights during quests. The only way to recover it is by using consumable potions, so it behooves you to fight to conserve it as much as possible.
- You’ll want to move on from one-star Champions as soon as possible. They simply aren’t strong enough to tackle many of the game’s story-driven quests, even after being leveled up and ranked up. Look for two-star Champions ASAP with an eye on moving on to heroes and villains with three stars or more when you acquire them.
- There’s a rock-paper-scissors relationship between the six different classes of Champions, except that those items have a few more friends. The relationships look like this: Cosmic -> Skill -> Tech -> Mutant -> Science -> Mystic -> Cosmic. Unless there’s an extenuating circumstance (such as you have only one Champion left and no revive or healing potions), you should always try to be on the correct side of these match-ups, as doing so increases your attack power and reduces it for your opponent.
- It’s not a bad idea to begin every fight by blocking. The computer AI doesn’t do the same thing every time to begin a match, but it does seem awfully anxious to get in the first blow a vast majority of the time. Even if you’re wrong, you can quickly go on the offensive if necessary. No one’s watching, so it doesn’t matter if you look silly blocking for no reason. I’d do it just to be safe.
- The Special meter at the bottom of the screen fills up when you deal and take damage. Most Champions actually have multiple special moves they can utilize, but the meter will need to fill twice before using the second one and three times for the third. Hitting the button before the meter fills and changes color will use all of the meter, even if you are getting close to the next tier. For that reason, it’s good to use a Special as soon as you have it if you aren’t going to wait for the next one. Otherwise you’re wasting precious time to start refilling the meter again.
- Gold, ISO-8 and Catalysts work together to improve your Champions. A certain quanity of ISO-8 is required to gain one level each time, and you need Gold to actually infuse it into your character. After hitting max level, you can use Catalysts to increase your character’s rank unless that’s maxed out too. One and two-star Champions only unlock their later special moves when you increase their rank.
- You can sell unwanted Champions for Gold, but in practice, there’s no real compelling reason to do this. For starters, Gold is fairly easy to come by, as you get it just by moving around the board during quests. You’ll also want a variety of viable fighters because of the class system we discussed before. Some quests contain only a few classes of enemies, and having options allows you to tailor a team so you have an advantage most of the time. Finally, you can play as many PvP arena matches as you have Champions, with each one having to wait two hours before being used again. Might as well give yourself as many PvP battles as possible and keep them around just for that.
- The system of crystals and Units can get a little confusing, so we’ll simplify it for you. The crystal you get every four hours gives you consumables, while the one you receive every 24 hours gives you a two-star Champion (and more rarely, something better). Versus crystals are earned in PvP QuickMatches, and they give you either Gold or Battle Chips … which can be redeemed for an Arena Crystal, which offers you a chance at a four-star Champion. The purple crystals you find during quests can contain a variety of rewards but mostly yield ISO-8. Last and certainly not least are the Premium Hero crystals, which can be purchased with Units, the game’s premium currency. These crystals guarantee you a two-star Champion at least and can give you up to a four-star Champion if you’re lucky enough.
- You’ve probably figured this out after a few minutes of play, but no, there’s no way to get a specific hero. You’re at the whims of the Collector and his crystals, so keep on grinding if you haven’t found your favorite.
- Replaying quests you’ve already beaten isn’t a bad idea if you find your team too weak to keep progressing through the story. There are branching paths on most of the maps, and completing all of the possible routes (some of which can be much harder than others) earns you bonus rewards.
Game Mechanics
When you go into the game, you will be taken to the home screen. There is a bar in the top of the screen. It has several options. They are:
- Home. This is shaded grey, simply because you are in the home screen.
- Fight. This is where you can play Quest Mode, Special Events and Versus matches.
- Alliances. This is where you manage, join and create Alliances.
- Crystals. This is the crystal vault, where you buy and open crystals.
- Champions. This is where you upgrade your characters, or champions.
- Inventory. This is where you see how many ISO-8 and potions you have.
- Store. This is where you use real money to buy in-app purchases.
- Chat. The bottom part of the screen is the chat. Just ignore what other players are saying. It's irrelevant.
- Inbox. The bottom left part of th screen is inbox, where you receive alliance invites, arena info, etc.
- News Banner. The middle-right part of the screen has news info such as arena info, catalyst date info, game changes, etc.
At the bottome left hand corner of the home screen, a sign saying "Featured Champion" will be there, along with a random tier 3-4 character. It changes every time you go in and out of the home screen. Well known Featured Champions include:
- Hulk
- Juggernaut
- Star-Lord
- Gamora
- Thor
- Colossus
- Hawkeye
- Black Panther
- Magik
The story mode here is actually called quest mode. In quest mode you have three acts, with a fourth one coming soon. Each act contains four stages and each stage contains six chapters. Each chapter contains roughly 4-7 fights, with Champion's health unchanging between fights. You can also play special events, which consist of quests to earn basic catalysts, quests to earn class catalysts (See Crystals And Items section for more info) and one quest, called Beyond Hope, that is basically the endgame. It is tough for a fully levelled up team. It would be impossible to do without doing normal quest mode first. So on that cheery note, let's move onto the walkthrough!
Walkthrough
Act 1 - The Contest
Play the tutorial. You get two one-star hero crystals. For the first, you get Spider-Man automatically. For the second, you get a random tier one character. Progress through quest mode, which is basically story mode. You shouldn't have any problems until chapter 6. If a champion's health gets too low, heal them with a small health potion. Leave the medium and team health potions for later, tougher fights. If you run out of health potions, break open the free crystal you get every four hours. All you get in there is gold, ISO-8, health potions and revive potions. If you are stuck, play a versus match. Break open the versus crystal you get from versus matches. You can get a two or three star Punisher, but it's unlikley you will. If you get 100 Units, buy a premium hero crystal. It's the easiest way to get a three or four star hero. When you get to Chapter 6, you face the toughest boss yet. Deadpool, also known as The Merc With A Mouth, Wade Wilson and "That totally awesome guy in a red suit." Deadpool has a special two that causes bleed, so you want to stay away from that. Dodging will help, as both Deadpool's specials are close range and don't have much reach. A tactic I find useful is to get a five hit combo or so and then block until Deadpool tries to use a heavy attack, which breaks blocks. At that point, simply interrupt him with a combo before he can do the heavy attack. This also works well against other enemies. Use your best, most skilled and healthiest character. If he/she doesn't win, use a revive, bring out another character or use a health potion. The great thing about the fights are that if a character gets knocked out and is returned, the health won't change. Say I have Spider-Man. He reduces Deadpool's health to 120 before he gets knocked out. When he is revived, Deapool will still have 120 health. One last thing I would say is this: be on the defensive. Block and dodge often and only attack when you're going to use a special or see an opening. Once Deadpool is defeated, move onto stage two. Alternatively, you may wish to get 100% on stage one. If you chose to get 100% on stage one, make sure you're leveled up and have at least a tier two character. Doing so will make your life much easier. You also get a ton of units for doing a chapter and clearing it 100%.
Stage two is a little tougher, but nothing you won't be able to handle with a two star team. However, you will sometimes face Adaptoids. They are robots native to the Battlerelam, and will attempt to kill you. They have class, such as mystic, science, mutant, skill and cosmic. Adaptoids are fairly weak and you will not have too much trouble with them. However, you may have trouble with Chapter six's boss, Vision. Vision is an android, so bleed attacks are ineffective against him. Try to dodge his attacks, as none of them are full screen. It is recommended to have a champion with regeneration for this fight. Healing and revive potions can be used here as well. Also, you may face ambushes. An ambush is simply an unexpected character that pops out of nowhere to battle you. Make sure you have at least a high level tier two for this one. You should be able to clear this stage no problem. Once you've cleared it, go back and get 100% on it. You'll need a science, tech, mutant, skill and cosmic champion to unlock all the gates. Gates are simply gates that can only be opened if you have a character with a certain class. You shouldn't find all of this too difficult. Once you've done 100% on stage two, move onto stage three as soon as possible.
Stage three is where the pressure starts mounting up. You face tier two characters, as previously you faced tier one characters. You will need at least a tier three character to deal with the enemies in chapter three. You also learn some new info about the Battlerelam. They don't call it "Battlerelam revelations" for nothing! You will face ambushes on almost every chapter, and there will be lots of gates. Start saving up for Prenimum Hero Crystals (see crystals and items section) as they are the quickest way to get a tier four character. I would also consider buying the Deadpool pack, which contains a tier three Deadpool, 800 mutant ISO-8, 300 units, 500 Battle Chips and other stuff. It costs thirteen British pounds or twenty American dollars. If you don't have that money, fine. If you do, consider buying the pack. Anyway, Chapter Six in Battlerelam Revelations has tougher enemies still. Even with the Deadpool pack, you might struggle. The boss for chapter six of Battlerelam revelations is Iron Man. He is a tech champion (duh!) and uses beam attacks. These cannot be dodge, so you have to block them. Iron Man does take bleed damage, so use Deapool, Drax, Gamora, Black Panther or Wolverine. Regeneration is important too, so Wolverine and Deadpool are strongly recommended for this battle. Once you've done Stage three, move straight onto stage four, The Feud Explodes. You should only come back to get 100% on stage three if you have at least two tier three characters.
Stage four, The Feud Explodes is tougher than stage three, but the difficulty doesn't ramp up immediately like it does in stages 2-3. Make sure you have at least two tier three characters on your team. The recommended team rating now goes to 1,000. This is quite a tall order. The final boss in The Feud Explodes is Star-Lord. Star-Lord is fairly easy to defeat. His first special can be dodged, and his second special is a close-up attack followed by a ranged attack. Dodge the close-up attack and block the ranged attack. Star-Lord has no bleed or regeneration, so this fight shouldn't be a problem. Once you defeated Star-Lord, you can go back and 100% Act 1, although it's not necessary.
Act 2 - Escalation
Act 2 is a major step up from Act 1. The first stage, which is Surrender to the Contest, has a first chapter with a recommended team rating of 1,500. That's a lot. In reality, you only need what got you through The Feud Explodes. Two three tier champions are a must-have (You should have this by The Feud Explodes. If not, consider grabbing the Deadpool pack), as things are going to get crazy from here. Some characters will have glowing silver stars. This means they have their Signature Ability (see Character section for more info) and are more dangerous. Send in the weak champions at the beginning, then use your strong champions to take out the boss, who has a much higher Power Index than the rest of his allies. Use revive potions sparingly and only at the boss fight. Try entering arenas, and open Daily Crystals, as you can get a three-star champion in one.The whole of Act 2, save for chapter six of stage four, should be a walk in the park. By now you should have roughly three three-star champions. When you fight Kang in stage four, chapter six, Act 2, be prepared. You'll need a minimum of two revives to defeat Kang.
Kang is the toughest boss battle yet. He's a tier four champion, the best tier in the game. Kang's specials are ranged and do quite a bit of damage. His first special is the same as Iron Man's first special. For his second, Kang leaps into the air, fires a bright blue beam, creates a pillar and sends it towards you. The AI is smarter for this fight meaning that Kang is trickier to beat. Always dodge then block after attacking. Kang also has armour, which is caused by his Signature ability. It reduces damage, making Kang even trickier. Healing potions and characters who can heal themselves are a must. Deadpool, Wolverine and Iron Man are very useful for this fight as well.
Congrats, you've beaten Act 2! The Collector will mention that you must now defeat Thanos. Repeat with Act 3, up-levelling your characters and so on. If things get too tough, simply go back, up-level your characters, open new crystals, get units by 100% Act 1 and Act 2.
Thanos is the last obstacle to victory-AKA act 4. Mystic Characters are a MUST, as they have a class bonus against him. He has around 5000 power index and has the most advanced AI yet- even better than Kang's. Have at least 3 revives and a bunch of health potions before you even THINK about fighting The Mad Titan. You should have at least 1 tier 4 by now, but if you don't then a maxed-out tier 3 will have to do, just bring along extra revives to compensate. After you defeat Thanos a cutscene will play, introducing your new opponent as The Meastro, who you will presumeably fight at the end of the unreleased Act 4.
Characters
Punisher
Signature ability - Lvl 1: Defy Pain. The Marine corps. The Vietnam war. The Italian Mafia. Frank Castle has conditioned himself for a high pain tolerance, granting him a 20% chance to endure a lethal blow.Synergies - Spiderman +15% Crit Damage
Class: Skill
Frank Castle, AKA Punisher, is awesome. His first and second specials are multi-hit and deal a lot of damage. Punisher' first special also causes bleed damage. His super looks awesome as well. His signature ability allows him to endure a lethal blow, making him last longer. He shares a synergy with Spiderman, who is on almost every team in the game. This makes Punisher more damaging with critical hits. No matter what tier he's at, Punisher really can punish.
Wolverine
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Cellular Regeneration. Wolverine's natural healing factor accelerates, granting cumulative Regeneration with a fixed chance to recover 5% of health.Synergies - Cyclops +15% Crit Damage
Class: Mutant
Wolverine is a common tier one and two character. He's a great fighter, able to wear down enemies with a normal attack that causes bleed and heal with an opponent's critical one. Specials one and two are both claw attacks, one being multi-hit and the other being a single swipe. Wolverine can drag out fights and wear characters down with his bleed and regeneration, so make sure he's on your team.
Thor
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Ragnarok. Dazing the Thunder God enfuriates him, while opponents dazed by the Thunder God become 300% more vulnerable targets for "That Which Smashes."Synergies - Iron Man +5% Armour, Juggernaut +6% Crit Rate
Class: Cosmic
Thor is a good choice for those who like strong damage and common synergies. He is a common tier 2 and 3. His first special is one hit, his second is multi-hit. All his specials stun the enemy, leaving you free to use your heavy attacks. Thor's signature ability allows him to armour break stunned opponents, and to benifit from being stunned himself. However, aside from that, Thor's not much. He's slow. but hits like a tank. He has no regeneration or bleed. All in all, The Odinson isn't a great character, but he'll do until you get a better champion.
Star-Lord
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Tactician. As blows are exchanged, Star-Lord familiarizes with opponents' techniques, increasing attack with his combo count and block proficiency with theirs.Synergies - Drax +4% Perfect Block Chance, Gamora +4% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Tech
Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord, is the space version of The Punisher. His first special is nothing special, his second is a smack on the head and a gun in the chest. However, it's his supermove that does real damage. It hits like a truck. Star-Lord doesn't have bleed, regeneration, armour break, poison, nullify or anything else. This lowers his usefulness, but at least he's a better champion than Iron Man.
Drax
Signature Ability -Lvl 1: Enthrall. Fury fascinates The Destroyer. He builds without limit, increasing attack by 10% for six seconds with each activation.Synergies - Gamora +15% Crit Damage, Star-Lord +3% Perfect Block Chance.
Class: Cosmic
Drax is another less-than-average character. His first special is shared with Hulk and Abomination, making it vastly overused. His second special does some decent bleed damage, but that's about it. Drax does some good synergies though. All in all, The Destroyer can't destroy the opposition.
Hawkeye
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Hemorrhage. Arrows strike the jugular with a fixed chance to inflict severe bleeding for the remainder of the fight dealing 200% of your attack per minute as direct damage.Synergies - Scarlett Witch +3% Power Gain
Class: Skill
A four-star Hawkeye is one of the most devastating characters in Contest Of Champions. His first special power drains, something rarely seen in this game. All specials are ranged and can hit the enemy from a distance. Scarlett Witch is a fairly common character and 3% power gain isn't too bad. Hawkeye is, in short, one of the best characters in the game.
Vision
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: The only known Synthezoid, the Vision is capable of synthesising 80 power periodically during battle 0100111101010000Synergies - Scarlett Witch +3% Power Gain, Iron Man +3% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Tech
Vision isn't the best. Power burn isn't effective enough to do much damage and his specials do no damage when blocked. His only saving grace is his poison and bleed immunity.
Scarlett Witch
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Veil Of Fortune. Whenever a Critical Hit occurs for either player, there's a 16% chance the Scarlett Witch manipulates the outcome for her benefit.Synergies - Captain Marvel +4% Armour
Class: Mystic
Scarlett Witch is the answer to all status effects, with her nullifying abilities. Her Veil Of Fortune is a powerful tool that can inflict random effects on either fighter. She's a good choice against Thanos and a very useful character overall.
Black Panther
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Lacerate. T'Challas' fists give way to cat-like claws, carving limitless lacerations in his target with an 8% chance, each delaing 15% of your attack as direct damage over 7 secondsSynergies - Deadpool +6% Crit Rate, Storm +4% Power Gain, Iron Fist +20% Crit Damage
Class: Skill
Black Panther is pretty good. He has bleed and his specials are all multi-hit. His synergies are good, but he's only available as 1,2 and 3 star variants. No arena has been created for him, which is surprising considering Iron Fist, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Rhino, Deadpool, Captain America, Spider-Man, Drax, Thor, Magic, Doctor Strange, Mrs. Marvel and Rocket Racoon have all had their own arenas. Just saying.
Rhino
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Rhino Armour. A thick polymer suit enhances Rhino's gamma-based strength and resilience increasing his physical resistance by 17.6%Synergies - Abomonation +5% Armor, Spider-Man +6% Crit Rate, Electro +4% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Science
Rhino is less-than-average. His specials are not ranged and only one is multi-hit. Plus his signature ability doesn't do much. He's available as tiers 2, 3 and 4, so no excuse for him being all right for new players
Storm
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Conduit. As Power surges and flows through her enemy, so too her bolts of lightning, dealing 100% additional Critical hit damage per point of enemy power.Synergies - Magic +6% Armour, Black Panther +4% Power Gain, Cyclops +4% Perfect Block Chance.
Class: Mutant
Storm suffers from the same problems as Rhino, only she's more fortunate. Her specials don't do any great damage, and one is ranged. However, they all stun, and Storm's Signature Ability is better than Rhino's. She's not the best, but she'll do if you're strapped for choice.
Hulk
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Hulk Rage. Hulk is angered by receiving damage, strengthening his attacks by up to 40% based on lost health. You won't like him when he's angry!Synergies - Thor +15% Crit Damage.
Class: Science
Hulk is awful. His synergies are terrible, his specials are low-damage, on-hit, non-ranged disasters. His only saving grace is his signature ability, which is quite good.
Iron Man
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Arc Overload. Iron Man overloads the Arc Reactor in his chest if health drops below 15%, briefly extending his life span with a burst of 38.0% Armor and regenerationSynergies - Captain America +6% Armour, Thor +5% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Tech
Iron Man is pretty good. Both specials are ranged and he hits hard. Plus, he's available in tiers 2,3 and 4, making him a highly-prized find. The downside? His combos are bad and tricky to do without getting hit.
Cyclops
Signature Ability - Lvl 1: Expertise.Synergies - Wolverine +20% Crit Damage
Class: Mutant
Cyclops is good, as both specials are fully or partly ranged. He looks really cool, and his third special is really damaging. All specials have armor break, but he's limited: Scott isn't available as 4 star champion. *sigh*. He does look cool, though.
Dr. Strange
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Counterspell. The Sorcerer Supreme automatically counters enemy Status Effects with beneficial countermagic. Spell Effectiveness: 56.2%Synergies - Thor +6% Armor, Spider-Man +6% Armor, Scarlett Witch +20% Block Proficiency, Black Blot +5% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Mystic
Dr. Strange is good. All specials are renaged, he's got loads of synergies, all good. He does have some random crazy abilities thrown in there which make him even better. Need I say more?
Gamora
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Assasanation. A 28.1% chance Gamora's Godslayer blade deals a lethal blow, striking for massive Critical Hit Damage.Synergies - Star-Lord +5% Armor, Drax +29% Crit Damage
Class: Cosmic
Gamora relies heavily on bleed damage, and her signature ability is good. Her synergies may not be the best, but the Galaxy's Most Dangerous Woman lives up to the title.
Rocket Raccoon
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Furocity.Synergies -
Class: Tech
No thing like Rocket 'cept Rocket! This gun-totting raccoon is a rare find, as he was only available in an arena. He's excellent at fighting, his specials are ranged, etc. and he also has some great abilities.
Deadpool
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Healing Factor. Permanently regenerating 67.4% Health per minute was granted when the natural healing factor of Wolverine was implanted into DeadpoolSynergies - Rhino +6% Crit Rate, Wolverine +4% Health, Punisher +4% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Mutant
Wade Wilso, Deadpool, The Merc With A Mouth. Deadpool is sadly available in tier 3 only, but he's still great. Not only is he the coolest character in the game, his third special is hillarious and he's great. Hold up, I've really gotta take this...
Superior Iron Man
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Arc Overload. Iron Man overloads the Arc Reactor in his chest if health drops below 15%, briefly extending his life span with a burst of 38.0% Armor and regeneration.Synergies - Captain America +6% Crit Rate, Thor +4% Perfect Block Chance.
Class: Cosmic
I don't see what's "superior" about this Iron Man. He's essentialy Iron Man with a coat of paint, as his bio, Signature Ability, specials and combos are the same. Only changes are his class and his looks. Dissapointing.
Winter Soldier
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Torment. The Winter Soldier prolongs suffering with 28..7% increased attack for each instance of bleed on the target.Synergies - Wolverine +5% Armor, Captain America +4% Perfect Block Chance.
Class: Skill.
The Winter Soldier is extremely similar to The Punisher, but Bucky's better with bleed damage, making him more ideal. Sadly he's not as cool as the Punisher.
Colossus
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Orgainic Steel. Pitor's organic metal skin shapes and strengthens to his will with no limit, increasing armor by 18.6% with a fixed chance.Synergies - Wolverine + 5% Armor, Juggernaut +6% Crit Rate, Magic +4% Health
Class: Mutant
Colossus is poor, his specials are not ranged, his signature ability is not extremely helpful, his synergies are not common. Oh, and let's not forget the awful haircut.
Ms. Marvel
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Energy Absorption. Attack is increased by up to 47.4% based on stored power. In addition, blocking partially absorbs energy-based attacks, fueling Ms. Marvel's power meter.Synergies - Captain America +5% Armor, Iron Man +4% Perfect Block Chance, Thor +4% Perfect Block Chance, Hulk +4% Perfect Block Chance.
Class: Cosmic
Ms. Marvel is pretty much identical to Captain Marvel. Her specials are average but her synergies are good. Plus, she has Poison Immunity, which can be helpful against Abombonation.
Black Bolt
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Provocation. Being struck by a critical hit tests Blackagar Boltagon's restraint, each time increasing either his attack or Critical damage by 12.9% for the remainder of the fight.Synergies - Spider-Man +5% Armor, Ronan +4% Attack,Cyclops +15% Block Proficiency, Hulk +20% Crit Damage.
Class: Cosmic
Black Bolt is powerful, as his fist special is ranged and his second deals HUGE damage, but comes at the cost of 5% damage to Black Bolt. His synergies, while not common, are not rare either. He, like Captain Marvel, has Poison Immunity.
Iron Fist
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Focus. The Iron Fists' repeated strikes to pressure points wreck cumulative havoc on the target's armor, with a 20% chance to reduce it by 12.3% for each activation.Synergies - Dr. Strange +5% Armor, Black Panther +5% Armor
Class: Mystic
Iron Fist is pretty good. Armor Break is fairly good and both specials are multi-hit. He's let down by poor synergies and non-ranged specials.
Juggernaut
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Unstoppable. The impact of enemy attacks is shurgged off with a 10.2% chance... Because he's the JuggernautSynergies - Colossus +6% Crit Rate, Hulk +6% Crit Rate, Dr. Strange, +4% Attack,
Class: Mystic
The Juggernaut is poor, his synergies are bad, his specials aren't multi-hit or ranged. Must I give more reasons?
Unstoppable Colossus
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Unstoppable. The impact of enemy attacks is shrugged off with a 10.2% chance.Synergies - Wolverine + 5% Armor, Magik + 5% Health, Cyclops +4% Perfect Block Chance, Juggernaut +20% Crit Damage
Class: Mystic
A mixture of Juggernaut and Colossus, this metal monster is only available through alliance crystals and comes in tiers 2 and 3. He's pretty useless and you won't be needing him much.
Ronan
Signature Ability - Lvl 8: Edict. The supreme Accuser judges the target, punishing them for their use of beneficial effects with 28.7% increased attack and stun durations.Synergies - Iron Man +6% Crit Rate, Black Bolt +20% Crit Rate, Gamora +20% Crit Damage
Class: Cosmic
Ronan is very similar to Thor. He even carries a hammer. Ronan therefore is the same average rank Thor is. Good to start off with, but no beneficial effects really hurt later on, so stick with someone else and don't be afraid to judge the accusser.
Magik
Signature Ability - Lvl 20: Rewind. 18.0% chance that Magik teleports into the past to a time before injurySynergies - Storm +6% Armor, Juggernaut +7% Crit rate, Colossus +5% health, Cyclops +5% Perfect Block Chance.
Class: Mystic.
Magik is a good character, her specials are good, as are her synergies and signature ability. Her only drawback is that her specials aren't ranged.
Captain America
Signature Ability - Lvl 60: Last Stand. The chance to Perfect Block all damage increases by up to 46.8% based on lost health, providing hope when Cap needs it most.Synergies - Spider-Man +6% Armor, Winter Soldier +6% Armor, Superior Iron Man +7% Crit Rate, Iron Man +5% Perfect Block Chance
Class: Science
The Cap is very good, he has a fair chance to Perfect Block, his synergies are common and good, his specials are good. What's not to love about the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan?
Winning Strategy Guide for Marvel: Contest of Champions
1. Take Advantage of Class Bonus
The class bonus in game gives the advantage side additional damage, as well as lowering the disadvantage side with less damage. The class bonus chain is as followed:Skill > Tech > Mutant > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Skill
As you are building out your team, make sure that you bring a team with class advantage when the stages get harder. You can check out the list of stages as well as enemies from our Marvel: Contest of Champions stage list.
2. How to Get More Heroes
The game offers you a few ways to get more heroes onto your team roster: Below is a quick run down of them:1. Premium Hero Crystal
You basically spend 100 units for each shot at opening a hero crystal. You have chances to get 2~4 star heroes with this method. This is the best way for you to receive the premium heroes in the game. You can get free units when you first complete the stage, and when you get 100% explore completion reward on any stage.
2. Daily Crystal
You have chances to receive 1~3 star heroes with the daily claim. However, the chance at landing a three star is pretty low. However, we have personally gotten a 3 star black panther from the daily crystal draw.
3. Arena Crystal
When you win at Arena fights, you will win arena chips which can be used to purchase the “real” arena crystal. You have a really small chance at getting a 4 star punisher with this method.
4. Arena Event Ranking Reward
From time to time, the game offers special events that reward the top players with strong heroes. Different events have different hero roster requirements. So make sure you boost up your heroes to be eligible for those special rewards.
3. Focus Upgrade Higher Star Ranked Heroes
It can be tempting to start upgrading your heroes when you first start the game. Do not do it! Wait until you have a roster of 3 star heroes and upgrade those. If you are stuck and really have to upgrade lower star heroes, start with 2 stars. Never ever spend your precious ISO-8 on the 1 star heroes, unless you have maxed out all the others first.Focus to upgrade your higher star heroes as they have higher potentials. The higher rarity heroes typically have stronger skills, better stats, more synergy options. All in all, save your ISO-8’s. For detailed guides on leveling up and ranking up your hero, as well as finding information on catalyst requirements, please check out Level up and Rank guide for Marvel: Contest of Champions.
4. Never Sell Your Heroes
Never ever sell your lower ranked heroes even if you have a higher rarity version of it. The reason being is that they are counted separated when it comes to arena fights. You can rotate through all of them daily to get max amount of Arena crystal. In addition, certain arena events require you to have lower ranked heroes for 3vs3 fights. Again, never ever sell your heroes!
5. Fight Arena Battles All the Time
Whenever you can, go through your entire roster to get all the possible versus crystals. Do not worry about losing your winning streak or just simply losing. As long as you have a shot at winning, it is worthwhile for you to fight. If you find yourself losing too much with the lower tiered heroes, consider leveling them up a little to boost your chance. However, you should still focus on your higher rarity heroes to push through the quests first.
6. Focus on Story Quests First
Your energy is limited. So unless you really need to get the catalyst from event quests, focus on the story quest first. More advanced quests typically give you higher XP and more ISO-8, so you always want to go for the hardest quest chain that you can handle. You receive free units when you complete a quest chain the first time, as well as you do a 100% exploration completion. This means, always go for the 100% completion as you move along. You want to receive all the free units that you can, to have a shot at higher rating heroes.
7. Taking Advantage of Synergy
Synergy is important for you to pass the harder stages at later acts. Synergy are bonuses when you a set combo of heroes on your team. The bonuses range from higher health, attack, critical damage, and more. Please check our detailed guide for Marvel: Contest of Champions Synergy Guide.8. Actual Fighting Strategy
Attack FirstIt’s always better to attack first. By attacking first, you have better shot at lowering enemy HP. If the enemy’s blocking, then you get a few free shots that lower enemy HP. If you do get hit after attacking, then you gain your special meter much faster at the cost of losing HP. Either way, it is better to be on the offensive in the game.
Finish Your Combos
After you get your initial hit, always follow up with the full attacking sequence. It means that you do not switch to “defense” or “block” in the middle. In general, you will almost never lose by finishing those attacks. If the enemy is blocking, you get the full sequence, if they switch in the middle, they are more often than not to lose to your attack.
Time Your Specials
Your specials are the main methods of dishing out damage against the enemy. Make sure you land those specials clean, meaning that find the best timing to unleash the special without being blocked. In general, some of the good timing include after you finish your combo, or in the middle of enemy combo.
Know Your Hero’s Specials
Different heroes have different styles of combo. Some specials are ranged hits, 1 hit close ranged, or a series of hits. If you use the specials incorrectly, you can very likely hit air and just waste those specials. So know what you are using before using them to get the most effect.
The same applies to enemy’s special as well. When they are fully charged, expect them to use the specials on you. This means keeping an eye out. It can be hard to dodge or block those specials, but if you have quick eye and finger, you can potentially pull it off from time to time.
Charge for Hard Attack after Distance
If the enemy AI has a good distance between you and him. Always “Charge” for the heavy attack, wait for them to start dashing towards you. If you time it right, your heavy hit blow them back at the corner. you can kill them without ever losing 1 single HP, in addition, you gain more special meter with charged attack as well.
Use Your Specials Often
When a fight is over, you lose all the special meters, so it means that whenever you can. Use those specials to finish enemies quicker, rather than drag out the batter with normal shots. You would rather use more special to conserve your HP.
9. HP and Potion Conservation Tips
In quest mode, your hero’s HP carries through to the next enemy before you finish the quest chain. You should almost never let your hero dies unless you are sure you do not need it later. It is much cheaper to use potions on your heroes rather than using reviving item.Change your fighting style from aggressive to defensive when your HP is getting low.
Save your potions for harder quests later, specifically class quests or special event quests to unlock catalyst.
Lastly, if your hero does die during battle, you can fight the enemy again with their HP already weakened by your previous hero.
